Better Design Better Living™ – BDBL™

We believe that good design can influence how we live and how we navigate daily life. We also believe that the simple act of paying attention to the nuance of daily life makes us better designers. Along the way, we will document some of that inspiration and share it with you here on BDBL.

Exploring density as an opportunity for better urban living.

We’re taking a look back at some of our past housing studies and our ongoing exploration of what urban residential living can be.

Our 9WY study explored how 165 residences could contribute to a more connected, vibrant downtown Kansas City; layering housing into a compact urban footprint while creating a strong relationship between private living spaces, the street, and the public realm. [Link in bio]

The design responds to its downtown context through a textured concrete podium and a rhythmic composition of glazing, metal panels, balconies, and screens. More than simply adding housing, the study considers how thoughtful density can shape streets, strengthen neighborhoods, and create meaningful places to live.

Meet Sydney Tucker! We’re excited to welcome Sydney to our collaborative team!

With degrees in Interior Design, Art History, and Architecture, Sydney brings a uniquely multidisciplinary perspective to KEM STUDIO. Her background spans the way we experience spaces, the history and culture that shape them, and the architectural ideas that bring them to life.

She joined us earlier this summer, and we enjoy having her perspective, curiosity, and design experience contribute to our work and studio culture.

Welcome to KEM STUDIO, @sydneytucker1!

This week we’re coalescing on the details while channeling summer through the music filling our studio.

“Gilberto” by @kamaalwilliams and @santamariabenz feels both modern and vintage, warm, layered and perfect for a summer day in the studio.

Enjoy.
